November Recap: The Latest from SBTS !

Hi Everyone!

Mel here, the last month has been one of hell of a month, I wanted to catch up my readers on just exactly what i've been up to. From family visiting, exploring liguria, and finishing up my time onboard Sy Path.

Early November Sun

November began with long weekend exploring the ligurian coastline as my Dad came to visit Genoa and me well (mostly the boats) but mostly Me. Since I began yachting I've always wanted dad to come out and visit where I was and see the boats I've worked on. Life, a pandemic and bad scheduling always got in the way. So this long weekend was the right one, we being Dad , myself and Aidan my other half spent the weekend exploring all liguria as to offer.

  • Pizza at La Sosta Degli Artisti- the most delicious Pizza at the best prices.

  • Dinner at Osteria Le Colonne- a fantastic spot for dinner in the historical center with authentic Genovese food.

  • Ice Cream from U Gelato Du Caruggiu- In my opinion the best spot for Pistachio.

On the Saturday we hopped on the train down to Cinque Terre which is super easy to get to from Genoa, and a great spot to escape from the boat for a few days. This time of the year was perfect to visit as not too many tourists and the temperature was just right for us northern folks. Average of 20 degrees at midday. Just perfect. We explored three of the Five villages, Riomaggiore, Manarola and Vernazza.

We started in Riomaggiore and did the hike across the trial to Manarola which was spectacular on a blue sky day, give dad and aidan plenty of time to get to know each other.

We then hopped on the train between the villages to Vernazza to find a spot for a swim (I know sounds Mad) it was the 1st of November and let's say the water was fresh, but really clear and refreshing. With a bit of prior research to visiting Vernazza we went what I think must be one of my favourite places to eat in liguria, the view is breathtaking and the spaghetti Vongole is to die for.

La torre is a must visit for Cinque terre, beware there's a little hike up to it, but its worth it. The food and the service is excellent, we were greeted with a friendly welcome and lots of laughter.

Mid November Blues- Last of Full time Employment

As many readers know this wasn't my first rodeo with leaving a yacht, it's never an easy thing to do. The smell of the crew mess is familiar you get used to your favourite cup for coffee in the morning, Suddenly this all comes to an end, for me the part that matter's most is the people. I had the privilege of spending two years working my closest friend, this meant that life onboard was always fun and never ever boarding.

The last month onboard any yacht is always a time of change and turbulent as new faces arrives and old ones say goodbye. Moreover, the end of November, meant the yacht was getting ready to leave to head west, henceforth the workload can be cumbersome. Hosisting of all our sails, testing of systems, final gathering of orders and deliveries. With hard work and a great team we got her ready to go back to sea.

Saying goodbye to Sy Path for now is a little bitter sweet both professionally and personally as it was the birthplace of Shaped by the Sea. I often write from anywhere but the crew mess onboard was where I had the courage, determination and self- believe to write the first blog, therefore it'll personally always have a special place in my heart.

In my time onboard Sy Path I began to build a presence for the yacht on social media @Sy.Path on Instagram, this has been such a passion project that I will continue to work on, to document the yachts adventures around the world. Take a moment to go and check it out.

End of November Recap

A series of goodbyes as we approached the yachts leaving date and I began the process of handing over information to the new crew. A rewarding and lengthy process as I thought over and reviewed my time onboard.

I've never been good at goodbyes and this one especially was a tear jerker. As saying goodbye to crew mates is one thing but saying goodbye to dear friends is another.

Whats to Come...

As I am practicing the ritual of funemployment, I will continue to write about my experiences from the yachting industry and life onboard. In January I will find out about some vital funding in order to finish my officer training and from their I will be studying almost flatout with some funemployment activities along the way. Moreover, you can't keep me away from the sea that long, I will be taking on freelancing jobs and deliveries here and there to keep the seatox topped up.

Need delivery crew that sings along and makes a good cup of tea and full of useless historical facts that drop me an email or Whatsapp.

As always keep smiling, laughing and loving the sea.

Mel xo
